Nightcrawler Fishing
Hello, I’m Dwight Norris of fishingatwork.com and today we’re going to be talking about Nightcrawler fishing. in previous videos I talked and complained about how cold it was. fish aren’t biting. I can’t find the fish. we’ve all gone deeper there. they’re obviously next to the bridge abutment or they’re down deep holes, but I can’t get to them.
I went to a website that’s made by a group called Charles River Alliance of Boaters (CRAB) and MIT. I found out that they actually made a topographic map online that shows me where all these locations are. I know we’re all the holes are now. I can actually reach some of them from shore where I normally go fishing at work. This is a game changer!
So I decided forget the lures, I’m throwing on the real deal. the real deal is a European Nightcrawler. Now why European nightcrawler fishing? Well it’s huge and it does well in cold temperatures because that’s particularly where it’s from. it actually works better in the brackish water area that I’m in and when it’s cold. so right now it’s fall, but it feels like the dead of winter. it’s so cold here. I don’t know where you are. the better place would be in Florida, awesome!
Watch out for the red tide! hopefully that’s going away and will stay away because I’m going there soon. I want to go fishing too. another great thing is they’re really well I told you they’re really large, but they can get really large. when you get them sometimes they’re a little small. if you do your due diligence and feed them and take care of them and if we get a lot of them; they can get nice and plump again.Another great thing is the wildly available. they’re great worms so I got a treat for you. I got some right now right here and not from the bait shop. actually got these european nightcrawler fishing worms online. a first time doing this. So here we go. As see here, this plastic bin has holes in it so they can breath. there’s paper their so dirt doesn’t come through but the air does.

It says 120 because they’re supposed to be 120 worms in here. Which is Hmm, I wonder about that. I opened it up and there’s a bowl worms and air and that sure how you count that but it’s close enough. for the price it’s worth it. Obviously there’s nothing on outside now because they don’t like the light! their night crawlers. So as soon as they see light; I took them out of the fridge they go straight to the middle spot. the ones that are hiding like this one. You see it, a couple that on there. Tell me if this is too close. I got 120 nightcrawler fishing worms for $33 bucks shipped online. This came from Insectsales.com a great company.

They also made a Worm Chow because people are doing this. so they can do some composting or like spruce up their their garden for the spring when they want to plant something. they need the soil to be arid and lots of nutrients from the worm casings that they create. Plus they actually reproduce a lot. I believe worms feed on corn mill, but this item apparently has some secret ingredients that they won’t to tell but that’s cool as long I can get it.

Actually let us look inside while we’re here. let’s check this out. Hopefully when I pull this piece of a wet paper up, which you should always keep the moisture on top. that keeps them nice and healthy. tomorrow morning at four maybe even actually no, right when we’re done I’m going to put some in there. they say a little bit of this goes a long way.

So sprinkle that on there. get it a little wet with about a quarter cup of water. Put the container in the fridge and keep them nice and cool but without freezing. see if they grow up. I’ve been thinking about doing something else which I’ll talk about later. There we go. Yes. Look in there. We got worms. worms baby! for those who like to fish a lot of lures, great. I like the fish with lures a lot too. sometimes when the weather gets tough the fish are sluggish and everything slows down. You have to do what you have to do. here at fishingatwork.com we’re here to catch fish.

We’re here to catch fish when we don’t have time. So we’re under time pressure. I don’t want to feel time pressure. I want you to be out there and catching awesome fish all the time. Whether it’s the peak of summer and the birds chirping. People are running. Everybody’s smiling and happy and all the way down to that bitter cold winter. maybe you’re going to try out ice fishing.
Your out there freezing your butt off. You can’t feel your ligaments, but boom! Getting coffee, bluegill, bass, pike, muskie, whatever is at your local nightcrawler fishing hole. So the best bait is a worm for freshwater and saltwater. around here it gets so cold the waves freeze and so does the action. you can actually go to the beach and a wave will freeze right at the curl.
It’s the craziest thing. I’m like, why move here. Maybe it’s a little better fishing in Virginia. there is an untapped resource of freshwater and saltwater fishing here. it’s not a lot for saltwater. striped bass, Cod, Haddock and all those things are here. the freshwater fishery is very active and most people don’t take advantage of it.

Nightcrawler Fishing Bait
Nightcrawler fishing bait is a great thing to use if you’re in these situations. there are a couple of ways you can use them. So I want to show you that I have a bunch of fishing stuff down here. let’s just go through it. If you don’t want to hear about it to skip forward and go to the next section. The next section I’ll be talking about….. something cool.

Where To Buy Nightcrawlers
One little secret I’ll tell you. so grab one. here are some style hooks made by eagle claw. I think you know who they are. these are what I use my go for panfish, bluegills, bream, crappie etc. etc. Very small hooks. their size six. sometimes I can go down to a size four and it is great for fishing.

if you’re fishing with children remember to tell them when the bobber goes down or you feel the line being pulled please hook the fish. don’t let them swallow the hook. I have a special tool over here hanging on my side rack. I’ve bought this new when we’re into that complication especially with my son.

This is the old hook remover. as you see here that part slides the line down. then it fall into this crack and then we get to the hook. the hook wraps around it. Twist and then pull it. pop it out. then pull it out and pop it out it until it comes out of the fishes gut. then it gets caught on the ridges. the barb gets caught on the ridges, which keeps it attached to the hook remover and doesn’t harm the fish.
Hook Remover
If you are a looking for an easy to carry and use hook remover this has what you need. You can stow it away easily and get out the pesky hooks when the fish mouth is too small to do it manually.
This is a big one. big fish and the barb gets caught in the ridges and then you can pull it out safely without killing the fish. Some fish die because they’re in shock from the long ordeal so try to be quick. So if you gotta let the fish go and do it quickly. take pictures. Try to support the weight of the fish. don’t choke them on the gills. you know what you’re doing.

So back to the ways to rig a nightcrawler for fishing. Eagle Claw actually helps me out by showing you a nice little diagram here on the on this side. you see there’s that simple bobber and a hook. I believe there’s a split shot here. there’s actually a swivel and the split shot right there. If you’re wondering what a split shot is you gotta know. you should know.
[tcb-script type=”text/javascript”]amzn_assoc_placement = “adunit0”;amzn_assoc_search_bar = “false”;amzn_assoc_tracking_id = “fishingatwo02-20”;amzn_assoc_ad_mode = “manual”;amzn_assoc_ad_type = “smart”;amzn_assoc_marketplace = “amazon”;amzn_assoc_region = “US”;amzn_assoc_title = “My Three Way Swivel Picks”;amzn_assoc_linkid = “77a3a4498c519268270014e2574a2df5”;amzn_assoc_asins = “B017XKXA6K,B073BRHWGQ,B07HK9G3WJ,B005GY37TG”;[/tcb-script][tcb-script src=”//z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/onejs?MarketPlace=US”][/tcb-script]
here it is. It’s just a little pincer weight. you can actually pull it apart here and squeeze it with your hand or around the fishing line. it gives you a little bit of weight because you don’t need much weight for a little bobbers. Bobbers like this. I’m not gonna show you how to use it. You know what you are doing. hold it there. You pull them aside, which exposes it. then boom, simple.
[tcb-script type=”text/javascript”]amzn_assoc_placement = “adunit0”;amzn_assoc_search_bar = “false”;amzn_assoc_tracking_id = “fishingatwo02-20”;amzn_assoc_ad_mode = “manual”;amzn_assoc_ad_type = “smart”;amzn_assoc_marketplace = “amazon”;amzn_assoc_region = “US”;amzn_assoc_title = “My Split-Shot Picks”;amzn_assoc_linkid = “77a3a4498c519268270014e2574a2df5”;amzn_assoc_asins = “B001AMGGBO,B000ALC89U,B0084EJ02I,B007XCWTES”;[/tcb-script][tcb-script src=”//z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/onejs?MarketPlace=US”][/tcb-script]
The other way of using it is called a slip rig. The egg sinker slides up and down the line. then you have a usually swivel. you have your small hook just like this below it. you can have a threeway swivel and have several hooks of different types on the side. you can do two worm on a rig or a two minnow rig or whatever you get connected to it.

That works fantastic. So look at this, see the edge thing of your bobber. you see what’s in between the snells and maybe some split shot. then you see the snell hooks. Simple words. for where I’m fishing It’s gonna be a long cast. It’s not that close. I’ll be hitting the edge right where the drop is and drops are nice.

Right now it’s not too cold to be sitting there thinking about going to shallows. I still see one or two of the smaller baitfish. They’re still hanging around near the shallows where they have to go down to the deep parts when it gets too cold. that’s where the predators are waiting for them. So I’m going to be casting with some ridiculous says weight. I’m going to start off smaller with this.
This is a two ounce weight. I’ll start with that to see how far it can go. i’ll have my smaller right here. I don’t know if it can handle more than that. if it does get bit it does get dirty down there. I will switch to the four ounce weight then I’m getting crazy. uh oh there’s also different types like there’s a pyramid sinker. It’s great for sandy areas.
My co-workers laughed when I said I was going fishing on a work day…But when they saw my catch of the day!
Do you only fish during the weekend? Do you want to go fishing more often? Click the link below to find out more!
I’m alone one day and I got some time for myself. my plan to surf rod or my extra long, medium heavy rod. Using the six ounce and get really into that current where the holes are. really test out nightcrawler fishing to the max. You guys have no idea what’s going to happen.I actually have some stuff for flounder which are in the flats near me. I can actually fish some of those if I can get my inflatable boat. Yes, I chose to go inflatable. Why? There’s many reasons. Basically the porta-bote is hard to find. they have a crack that appears on the transom section that bends.

It’s portable and it leaks on people in four or five years. it costs $3,000 and it’s not like an easy patch. you can stick some flex seal in there or some rubber stuff or the spray stuff or the sealing type of it. it fixes it but only if you don’t fold it again. As soon as you fold it again it’s broken. honestly, I thought about getting a foldable boat because I wanted to fold it…..A LOT! If I can’t do that it’s a waste unless you have money to keep buying them or don’t want to fold it like me.
Actually I can store it. I don’t have like a spot to put a boat at yet. my parking spot is filled and there’s nowhere on the land to put it. that’s what happens when you live close to the sea… so it needs to go in the house. On that note I hope to move soon to a place with a big parking spot and a garage.
Inflatable boats work better. I can fold it up put it in the bag then the house. The Sea Eagle Sport Runabout is sea ready! that’s what they use with the 14 foot version. they use it for the fire department and Coast Guard.
Sea Eagle 14SRKDT Sport Runabout
I was looking into buying this inflatable boat in the past, but changed my mind after realizing I was paying to much for the product. I now promote Saturn boats because they are cheaper and they have heat welding on the tubes, which is what is used on Hypalon inflatable boats.
It goes over 10 foot waves. It holds over 2000 pounds of people like divers and stuff. it’s safe. many chambers in there and I feel safer with that in the ocean than most other things. So I’m gonna go on the ocean with a self-inflating raft and coast guard radio just in case. the cost is the exact same dollar amount. I can roll it up and put it in my house. I can fit an engine four times as big on a Sea Eagle. The porta-bote 14ft only holds a 10 horsepower max. I can fit a 40 horsepower by use a plastic full boards on the Sea Eagle 14ft. When you get on the see you need to get in and out fast so this is a no brainer! So totally off the subject of nightcrawler fishing. back to these snell hooks. I had a couple more. I am not sure why I’m showing this one, but I got some more. I have some for saltwater rigs. If there’s any saltwater fisherman out there and you’re looking for some flounder or some fluke you might have seen these super long Chester hooks.

I actually have never used them. I bought them like I would do so much fishing in the ocean since I am right in the Boston Harbor. I can get out there if I get a boat or doing a boat share. I am going to do it. this camera is going to capture me with a lot of videos me getting bounced around me learning things. my journey to go fishing at work and going fishing more often and going fishing with my family. Things all us fishermen want to do. I should probably should get a GoPro for the boat attachment…. I would hate to have my phone end up at the bottom of the Charles River or the ocean….Basically for flounder and flukes you’re going to go with sea worms. They are crazy looking. it looks like a bloodworm but it has like a small mouth. it has a bunch of little rubber things on it’s sides, but it’s actually like feet but not feet coming up both sides of it. it makes it look like a crazy milliped. the sea worm bites if you mess around and don’t pay attention. So watch out where it’s mouth goes. it’s even worse than the bloodworm. it will actually bite you and it will hurt.

So when you grab it you put on the hook. don’t waste any time. one of the hooks you can use for that is this fluke rig right here. It has the swivel with the easy open snap built in here. you can just slap on a nice big six ounce weight if your in the current or pyramid weight if you’re in a sandy bottom, which is where the flounder and food are. so you probably don’t want to get a bigger version of this.
Just go big with your weight if it’s rough out there. Go buy the worms, clams, and squid. Back to the show. Where to buy nightcrawlers. you can get them at the local baitshop. hopefully you have one near you. I have one that’s within five miles. It has great hours. The person that works there owns it. he’s very welcome to help you do anything you need to do and how to do it and where to catch the fish. So if you have a local bait shop near you please support them. get stuff when you can. if you can’t get there go other places to get it. You can go to the sports store like Dick’s Sporting Goods or even like Walmart. Some places that used to sell fishing bait like that retail stores have stopped because they weren’t selling that much and the bait was dying too often.

So they kind of pulled it back. You might even find some convenience stores in certain areas of the country that will be sell fishing stuff because nobody else is. all the people are going into a convenience store and saying oh you have any nightcrawler fishing bait? No, you got any bait? No.. Hey, maybe we should get some fishing bait and put in one of the freezers. I think we made some good return on investment. there are some good margins if their is no competition.
Think of some nightcrawler worms. you get a couple of containers in the freezer and they’re like oh man, you got worms. I’ll buy all of them. well you’ll pay for that. you can be like me and try out buying your worms online. Here they are. they came in a box and came in two days. they were properly packaged and put in a nice USPS priority box with some papers and some styrofoam on it. nice and moist paper on the inside to have an area that is habitable for European nightcrawlers. this is a real company that isn’t messing around.

This is the amount of worms that are in this container. they can breathe and have a nice moist environment with the paper and the soil. it probably has a little bit of food in there so they don’t show up hungry. It says in the paperwork they haven’t haven’t eaten for six days. So you want to get them into a new environment which I don’t have a new environment for them. So get that compost and get started. You also get worms in your backyard. you can dig them up. you have a garden. You could throw in all the poop and when all the old plants have died and fallen back to the earth. They provide nutrients that they use from the tree and they give it right back the same soil. that tree is going to grow so the cycle of life. Last thing I wanted to talk about which I did not divulge to you earlier is………
My co-workers laughed when I said I was going fishing on a work day…But when they saw my catch of the day!

Vermicomposting – Raising Fishing Worms
What!?! He just told me to go to the local bait shop. Well, if you’re going to be nightcrawler fishing with a lot of worms like this guy maybe you want to think about raising them. raising a couple hundred using vermicomposting. That’s a small time thing in your house. Especially when it’s winter out here in the northeast.
Everything is hunkered down towards somewhere warm. I saw some very nice worm composting options online. there was a stack tray version where you have your food on tray one. tray two has some worms in some dirt grit stuff. They need actual pebbles and microscopic things to break down the food. They also need the microbes and stuff that come out of the rotting food that falls down into that tray. they eat it that way.
there’s another layer under them, which catches stuff. this is me running out of memory. I will talk about all that in a different video where we actually have the tray. I’ve done it. I’ve started and I can show you all the worms playing nice and happy doing their thing. maybe I’ll have some compost for my spring garden. I do some gardening with basic stuff just making some lettuce and carrots, tomatoes.
Basic things you can get in store. You can buy the baby worms. Put them in the soil and watch them grow. They eat the produce and you can also raise them in your actual garden too. I’m not sure how it works out if you want to use the worm later. you have to dig them out. then you might dig them improperly and actually hurt them. then you might not get all the ones you want. It says easier to have the compost bin.
you can pull out the tray that have all the worms to get the worms you need for that day or that trip that you making. then put the rest back. they’re happy to continue their life. they’ll continue eating. they’ll continue producing free worms.

So if all this sounds cool, go out and do it. Try it out. grab some somewhere. I am next week on Monday at my work. I’m going to pull these puppies out. I’m gonna try that spot new spot.
I’ll make a video about it. you’ll see me acting foolish getting the worms on there. I will be thinking or seeing if that hole that’s supposed to be out there is real. If I get something I’m gonna be happy dude. a very very happy dude. I’ll be doing a lot more. I’ll definitely be investing in raising some fishing worms. with the European nightcrawlers and red wigglers pretty much anything that I can get a bite from on the Charles River will come.now that you here go down below click that like button, subscribe, write a comment if you think this is cool.
