Best Anti Backlash Baitcast Reel

best anti backlash baitcast reel

If you have ever used a baitcasting reel before you know the displeasure of accidentally letting your thumb off the reel and getting a surprise birds nest.

Back in my early days, learning how to cast was really hard and seems counterintuitive to slow down the free spool before the lure hits the surface. However, if you didn’t you would be done fishing for the day!

Many people won’t even touch a baitcasting reel because of this fact. Now that problem has been solved by a new magnetic braking system that several manufacturers are using.

When it comes to the best baitcast reel that does this, you don’t have to go any further than the Daiwa Zillion.

Sure enough, it will show you a new level of technology that virtually eliminates backlash on baitcasting reels. If you haven’t looked into Daiwa fishing reels then you should take a look right now.

Best Anti Backlash Baitcast Reel 2020

So the DAIWA Zillion TWS series is the best, but why? Below you will find all the reasons why you should be buying one of these reels today if you love to fish with a baitcaster.

I know that you have a truckload of gear, but you don’t have any gear like this if you are looking for anti-backlash baitcasting reels. Let’s be honest, don’t you want 2 truckloads of gear?

Below you will find the full section of Daiwa Zillion TWS baitcasting reels. Each one is a little bit different in speed ratio and accent colors.

However, they all have the anti-backlash technology that you need to make your day on the water more pleasant. Everybody may be a master fisherman, but we all have our days!

Daiwa Zillion TWS 100XXS + 100XXSL (Super Xtra Hyper Speed)

This is the fastest fishing reel in the series. It is best for people who need to crank a lot of things quickly. We are talking about crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and other similar lures.

At a speed ratio of 9.1:1, they have the color-coding of blue for the handle and top rail. It is an easy indicator to see, which one you have purchases instead of looking at the version code.

You will also find the speed ratio written on the side of the reel as 9.1. Each of these reels is built specifically for a professional fisherman who doesn’t want to change his cranking speed, but rather have the reel change speed for him.

When you are in a heated tournament, you have to last all day and be focused. Take out the guesswork and just use what you need when you need it.

Daiwa Zillion TWS 100HS + 100HSL (Hyper Speed)

Providing a slightly slower retrieve at 7.3 is the Hyper Speed. Based on normal baitcaster this is still fast. Let me tell you that having a fast reeling baitcasting reel can put some wear and tear on it fast.

Fortunately, these are built to last and regular maintenance will have you claiming this is what quality is decades down the road.

Daiwa Zillion TWS 100H + 100HL (High Speed)

The high-speed version is the last one that provides a left-handed version. The reason for not doing that at the lowest level is beyond me.

However, it is their business and not mine. I am sure at that price point people aren’t interested in that type of feature. You still have plenty of speed at 6.3:1, but we are getting closer to the land of normal.

Daiwa Zillion TWS 100P (Power Speed)

The power speed is what everybody expects out of a baitcasting reel. Gear ratio is normal, but you still have many great parts like the Super Corrosion Resistant Ball Bearing for more exposed sections.

Many pros use Daiwa and sport their fancy logo upon them. They do this not only because they are paid, but also because they can win with this gear. Having the wrong gear won’t help you win a sponsorship or a tournament.

Features

The full line of technology from Daiwa are packed into these reels. However, you probably are interested in just a few that will make life better for you.

In this section, you will see different features that are on the full line. You will surely be impressed because most reels don’t have this amount of technology built into them.

  • Free Floating Spool – The spool is floating on stainless steel ball bearings that are connected to a pinion gear that is completely seperate from the spool. This means you get longer, smoother casts.
  • MagnaforceR-Z Cast Control – This is the magnetic braking system that is behind the anti backlash ability of this series of baitcasting reel.
  • T-Wing System (TWS) – The structure of the lines entry point to the spool has been reduced, which also reduces line friction when reeling.
  • Zaion Side Plate – Lightwweight to help you be able to fish all day long.
  • Ultimated Tournament Carbon Drag (UTD) – 13.2lbs of drag
  • 10 Ball Bearing System
  • Swept Handle – Easily being able to set the drag with micro-clicks without readjusting your grip.

How Do You Prevent Backlash On A Baitcaster?

Preventing backlash can be easy if you use a Daiwa Zillion TWS or similar anti-backlash baitcasting reel.

However, not everybody can afford one or tell there significant other that they are buying even more fishing gear! So what do you do… You have to practice!

Yes, I remember practicing with my best friend in the yard. We did several things that his dad instructed us to do before he would ever let us touch his baitcasting reels.

These things aren’t learned in a day either. Matter of fact, we had several birds nest in our cheap reels were bought before we became proficient.

Untangling a nest or sometimes having to respool line to do it again is not pleasant on your mind or a middle school kid’s wallet ($0 cash).

Just as a note we practiced with 3-4oz weights. We always cast away from the house. Thankfully the yard was about 30 yards long. If you can’t find a space like this at your house then go to a park or just practice at your normal fishing spot and use different markers.

  • 10-yard cast
  • 40-yard cast
  • Hit an object (tree, rock, mailbox…)
  • Flip into a bucket 2 yards away
  • Flip into a bucket 5 yards away
  • Flip into a bucket 10 yards away
  • Bounce the weight under an object (low branches)

Once you were able to do all of these things without getting a bird’s nest or knocking out the window of your car in the driveway, then you pass. We didn’t break any windows during our practice. However, it was possible.
