Many fishermen are under the notion that a good spinning reel should cost a lot of money. This is simply not the case. In fact, I've never spent more than $100 on a spinning reel, and the ones I use are more than adequate for all my fishing activities. The point here is that a good spinning reel doesn't have to break the bank. The key is to buy your reel from a high-quality manufacturer. The two brands that I like the most are Penn and Pflueger. These two companies make high quality spinning reels at very reasonable prices. In fact, my forty dollar Penn Pursuit III spinning reel has been with me for over 6 years, and I would never dream of using anything else. This reel has helped me catch a lot of very big bass.

When it comes to spinning reels, my philosophy has been to get a new reel in the range of $70-100. The budget does not matter much. It’s perhaps not worth me paying over one or two hundred for a spinning reel. I don't really need a $1000 spinning reel, but something that won’t be frustrating, that lasts long and allows me to cast wherever I want. And one of the key factors of getting a quality spinning reel under $100 is paying attention to the number of ball bearings that come with the reel. As a general rule, the fewer balls bearings in the reel, the more 'play' the crank has. For a reel that will last long, you want as little ‘play’ as possible. And my opinion is that the easier the reel "engages” the better it is.
